Senior families are concerned about the welfare of their senior members as they begin to experience the issues of aging. The onset of this phase of life is often subtle and gradual, difficult to pinpoint, but clearly felt by all those involved.
For the senior; these changes are difficult to accept, routinely denied and sometimes they are mourned. During this phase of life, special interventions and assessments are required. Our Transitions program is focused specifically to provide expert help in this stage of life for all who are involved.
The senior will often begin to experience depression, memory loss, poor judgment, irritability, relationship problems, and difficulty completing normal activities of daily living (ADL's).
Tasks that used to be accomplished with barely a second thought now seem difficult or even impossible. This includes relatively complex tasks such as driving, banking, or paying bills on time. Later in the process simpler tasks such as washing hair, collecting the mail, or cooking begin to suffer.
For the senior family this is a sensitive time. No one likes to lose their independence, and it is human nature to cling to it as long as possible. Unfortunately, this can force the family members to make some difficult choices like
Often what is needed is a psychological assessment and personal skill evaluation for the senior. This will help determine their cognitive functioning level, mood state, and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL's). Once specific information is obtained, decisions become more apparent, and explaining these decisions to those affected becomes easier for the care giver.
Geriatric Counseling can then be utilized to facilitate the implementation of these decisions. This process can help the senior to adjust to the changes they are experiencing, and prevent any associated changes in mood. The seniors family can also benefit from counseling as they strive to adjust to the changes in their roles, cope with added stress, and sometimes begin to take on absolute responsibility for their loved one's life.
Skill training can assist the senior in coping with some of these changes; learning alternative responses to familiar situations.
